Less than five percent of those served by the Food Bank are homeless. The majority of these people are working families with children, seniors living on a very tight budget, even college students and military families (nearly 40,000 active-duty members of the military, veterans and their families, every month).
The Food Bank serves an average of 550,000 people in need every month in communities throughout San Diego County. Among children, the number is even more concerning, with one out of every five children experiencing food insecurity. In San Diego County, one out of every six people experiences food insecurity, meaning they don’t always know where their next meal will come from. In 2020, the San Diego Food Bank distributed 63 million pounds of food. Together, these organizations comprise the largest hunger-relief effort in San Diego County.
